Brief Info about my Research: #CrazyIndonesia
1. Hi all, today I am going to share about Cult/Exploitation/B Movies from Indonesian (1970s-1990s) recirculated in Western world by DVD in 2000s. I will use hashtag #crazyindonesia
2. My research at @uea_ftm is still at the very early stage. Hopefully anybody will give me feedback or suggestion on #crazyindonesia
4. In 2009,I already wrote the big picture of the phenomenon titled The Other Side of Indonesia: New Order’s Indonesian Exploitation Cinema as Cult Films http://artsonline.monash.edu.au/colloquy/download/colloquy_issue_eighteen/iminjaya.pdf
#crazyindonesia
5. I am very proud that this very paper was cited in Lobato’s Shadow Economies of Cinema and Mendik & MAthiisj’s 100 Cult Films #crazyindonesia
6. Ah ya, in 100 Cult Films, #crazyindonesia is represented by Lady Terminator (#54).the full list: http://www.imdb.com/list/4eXubongMjk/ #crazyindonesia
7. Lady Terminator = Pembalasan Ratu Laut Selatan #crazyindonesia
8. Free download of Lobato’s Shadow Economies of Cinema: http://www.palgrave.com/PDFs/9781844574117.pdf #crazyindonesia
9. For the definition of Cult cinema, among others, I use this http://www.cultographies.com/definition.shtml anatomy, consumption, political economy, cultural status #crazyindonesia
10. Perhaps many people already know that some international DVD labels redistributed some old Indonesian films. Among them: MondomacabroDVD @mondomacabro, Troma Team @tromateamvideo and VideoAsia #crazyindonesia
11. For Indonesian context, it was @jokoanwar who mentioned it first on his essay at The Jakarta Post : http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2001/12/09/bad-ri-films-a-big-hit-overseas.html 9 December 2001 #crazyindonesia
12. @jokoanwar also mentioned this phenomenon in his next writing while reviewing a movie: http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2003/07/26/horror-flick-039the-black-magic039-casts-bad-spells.html 26 July 2003. In 2005 he put some DVD covers into his multiply blog (the link is vanished now, so sad) #crazyindonesia
13. Today I’m focusing on fandom and reception of those films in Western countries. #crazyindonesia
14. It is amazing that those films from late 1970s to early 1990s are still available (VHS, DVD, VCD) and celebrated by cult followers all over the world #crazyindonesia
15. The life spans of the films are longer than those art-house cinemas or some box office. It is very hard to find films by USmar Ismail, Garin Nugroho, or Teguh Karya in home video format #crazyindonesia
16. On the other hand, the fans celebrate fantasy and action genre directors such as Arizal, Sisworo Gautama, Jopi Burnama, Ratno Timoer, Ackyl Anwari, Imam Tantowi, and Tjut Djalil #crazyindonesia
17. The main reason why #crazyindonesia films exist: international distributors redistribute the films and the fans celebrate & produce texts from them #crazyindonesia
18. International distributors prefer these low-budget “low-taste” films since the beginning of Indonesia’s involvement in international film market: 1982 #crazyindonesia
19. SM Ardan wrote: Permanent Working Committee for the Promotion and Marketing of Indonesia Films Abroad of The National Film Council sold some b movies at The Manila International Film Festival, 18-29 January 1982. #crazyindonesia
20. Some of the titles are Srigala (The jackal), Ratu Ilmu Hitam (Queen of Black Magic), Primitif (Primitive), and Lima Cewek Jagoan (Five Superwomen, also known as Five Deadly Girls); #crazyindonesia
21. In 1983, at the same event, they sold marketed rights to some films, including Pendekar Liar (The Outlaw Hero), Jaka Sembung (The Warrior), Perhitungan Terakhir (The Final Judgement) and Membakar Matahari (Burning The Sun, also known as Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters 2) #crazyindonesia
22. Producer of Rapi Films @rapifilms Gope Samtani says that the first time they sold a film for international market was Primitive for an Italian distributor company. Later on, they sold many films at Cannes, American Film Market, and other film market. Among others: Jaka SEmbung (the Warrior), and Hell Raider Pasukan Berani Mati,) #crazyindonesia
23. Apparently, buyers at international film market prefer exploitation cinema, not art-house cinema or drama ones. #crazyindonesia
24. So, since 1982, film producers, especially Rapi Film & Parkit Film, made films for international market. Mostly, straight-to-video with VHS format. #crazyindonesia
25. There are 2 kinds of films: (1) the ones with “Indonesian Genre” (Karl Heider),such as silat, kompeni, and legend: Jaka Sembung (The Warrior), Queen of Black Magic etc #crazyindonesia
26. (2) the ones that specifically for foreign market who love exploitation (women-in-prison, womensploitation, cannibalism etc) #crazyindonesia
27. The producers served the taste of Cult fans, dubbed the films into English and use foreign actor (Peter O’Brian, Chris Mitchum, Cynthia Rothrock, etc). #crazyindonesia
28. Let’s enter the world of fans studies and reception studies. Mostly, cult fans seek for the unusual, the unknown, and the exotic #crazyindonesia
29. The term #crazyintdonesia was coined by Jack J, a big fan.in his blog, he wrote “Crazy Indonesia: The Amazing THE WARRIOR Series, July 9 2009
http://enlejemordersertilbage.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/crazy-indonesia-warrior-and-ninja.html #crazyindonesia
30. The term “The Warrior series “ obviously refers to Jaka Sembung movies. #crazyindonesia

Call for Papers: Workshop on Indonesian Cinema
Workshop on Indonesian Cinema
Friday 18 October 2013
SOAS, University of London
The Centre for South East Asian Studies at SOAS will be hosting five days of Indonesian film screenings from 16-20 October 2013. To coincide with this event, a workshop is planned which will bring together academics and students working on Indonesian film. The theme of the workshop will be as broad as possible in order to allow colleagues to exchange ideas regarding their current research. It is anticipated that one or two film practitioners will also be able to participate. Hopefully a number of the papers presented at the workshop will be brought together for publication in a journal special issue.
The event is partially supported by the Indonesian Embassy in London and there may be some limited funding available to help with transport and accommodation costs. However, those interested in attending should also seek support from their own institutions or external funding bodies.
Anyone interested in participating in the workshop should send an abstract of approximately 200 words to Dr Ben Murtagh by 12 July 2013. <bm10@soas.ac.uk>

Tujuh Film Terbaik Indonesia Sepanjang Masa
menyatakan film terbaik Indonesia
sepanjang masa.
merusak budaya, tapi menciptakannya.
mau kemana perfilman Indonesia kita. Untuk penonton, daftar semacam ini bisa
menjadi semacam panduan menonton.
Lewat Djam Malam (Usmar
Ismail, 1954)
Film
terbaik dari sutradara terbaik Indonesia. Tak heran kalau film ini adalah pilihan
pertama untuk direstorasi total di L’Immagine
Ritrovata atas biaya National Museum of Singapore dan World Cinema Foundation,
Film
karya Bapak Film Indonesia ini berhasil menguak tentang perang batin
manusia-manusia Indonesia paska-revolusi fisik.
setelah filmnya dibuat, Trisnojuwono mengangkatnya menjadi novel. Film ini
berlatar belakang revolusi fisik, ketika banyak tentara Indonesia ditawan
penjajah Belanda. Banyak yang mencoba melarikan diri, tapi susah. Justri Parman
(Sukarno M Noer) bersahabat dengan seorang Belanda (B Ijzerdraat), yang
membuatnya dituduh pengkhianat,
Ide
(Italia). Film ini bercerita tentang
Mamad, seorang pegawai negeri tua yang korupsi alat tulis kantor kecil-kecilan,
sementara istrinya sedang hamil tua.
haknya, tapi terdengar bagai angin lalu
oleh budaya korupsi yang akut. Sebuah komentar social yang keras dan menyentuh,
dan masih sangat relevan hingga saat ini.
Judul
film ini berubah berkali-kali Dari Matinya
Seorang Pegawai Negeri, Ilalang sampai
akhirnya Renungkanlah Si Mamad.
Walau dibuat awal
1990an, namun pernyataannya masih relevan hingga saat ini. Dan ketika ide
sebuah karya bisa terus bergema tanpa bisa diusangkan waktu, inilah salah satu
ciri sebuah mahakarya.
Film ini adalah sebuah contoh nyata
bagaimana sekelompokl seniman idealis berjihad melawan kemungkaran dengan
karya, ketika sang diktator masih berkuasa. Dan, sebagaimana ditegaskan Rendra,
takwa menjadi garis orbit perjuangan mereka.
Pedjuang (Usmar Ismail, 1960)
Film berlatar tahun 1947 kala sebuah
sejarahnya langsung.
Tjoet Njak Dhien (Eros Djarot, 1986)
Film perang terbaik dan terkolosal
sekaligus.
mendapatkan 9 Piala Citra, termasuk Film Terbaik.
atmosfir budaya patriarkal tradisional.
seorang kyai tradisional, permintaan cerainya ditolak bahkan dianggap tak
Minang Kabau.
